In 1946, official representatives from 25 countries first met in London and decided to form an international organization, which would shed light on the constitution of standardization. The date of 14 October was then chosen to celebrate World Standard Day.

There is a theme of World Standard Day every year. Programs are organized based on that theme. Like every year, this year also has a theme, World Standard Day 2020 theme; “Protecting the planet with standards”.
