Wimbledon 2021: Sameer Banerjee becomes junior champion, equals Roger Federer-Leander Paes

London. Sameer Banerjee has become the junior champion of Wimbledon. The Indian-American player on Sunday won the Wimbledon Boys singles title at Wimbledon. Samir Banerjee defeated Victor Lilov of America 7-5, 6-3 in the final. With this victory, he has included himself in the elite group of veterans like Roger Federer, Stephen Edberg, Gail Monfils. Federer, Edberg, Monfils also started their careers by winning the junior title of Wimbledon.

The 17-year-old Samir Banerjee was knocked out in the first round at the Junior French Open, but he did an amazing job at Wimbledon. They had to struggle to win the first set but in the second set they easily won 6-3 and captured the title. Sameer’s parents moved to America in the 1980s.

Ramanathan Krishnan was the first Indian to win the Junior Wimbledon Championships in 1954. His son Ramesh Krishnan won the 1970 Junior Wimbledon and Junior French Open titles. Legendary Leander Paes won the Junior Wimbledon and Junior US Open titles in 1990.
