Digital Desk, Kiev. Ukraine’s cabinet has set up the National Authority for Mine Action. It is a special government body that will deal with the problem of landmines in the eastern region of the country. The new body, headed by the Defense Minister, will coordinate the activities of various ministries, central and local authorities and organizations involved in clearing landmines, Xinhua news agency reported.

One of the priority tasks of the new department was the introduction of a national standard for mine operations. On-going hostilities between government troops and pro-independence armed groups since 2014 have left nearly 16,000 square kilometers of land in the eastern region with explosive remnants of war (ERW), making Ukraine the fifth most landmine-contaminated in the world. According to the United Nations, more than 1,190 mine/ERW casualties have been recorded in Ukraine since 2014. In 2020 alone, 55 civilians were injured and 15 killed by mines or ERWs. However, these are only verified casualties, and the actual number is likely to be much higher. About two million people are currently exposed to the threat of landmines and ERWs in eastern Ukraine on both sides.
