New Delhi. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday praised the performance of all the Indian medal winners at the Tokyo Paralympics and spoke to them over the phone to encourage them. Monday became a memorable day for India in Paralympics. Indian players have performed brilliantly so far, winning a total of 7 medals including two gold. This is India’s best ever performance in Paralympics. The country won four medals at the 2016 Rio Olympics.
Javelin thrower Sumit Antil won India’s second gold medal at the Paralympics, breaking world records several times in the men’s F-64 event. Sumit, 23, from Sonepat, Haryana, threw 68.55 meters in his fifth attempt, which is a new world record. PM Modi later spoke to Sumit on the phone, a video of which has been shared from ANI’s Twitter account.

Earlier, shooter Avani Lekhara created history by winning the gold medal in Class SH1 of 10m Air Rifle. He equaled the world record by scoring 249.6 in the final and finished first. Avani is the first Indian female player to win a gold medal in the Paralympic Games. This is also India’s first medal in the shooting competition of these games. This is also the country’s first gold medal in the Tokyo Paralympics. She is the third Indian woman to win a medal at the Paralympic Games.

The Prime Minister congratulated Avni Lekhara for winning the gold medal in the women’s 10m air rifle shooting event at the Tokyo Paralympics and said it is indeed a special moment for Indian sports. He said in a tweet, ‘Unforgettable performance Avani Lekhara! Congratulations on winning the gold for the hard work you deserved. You made this possible with your hardworking nature and passion for shooting. This is a special moment for Indian sports. Wishing you all the best for the future. The Prime Minister spoke to Lekhara over phone and congratulated her.
According to the officials of the Prime Minister’s Office, the Prime Minister told Lekhara that it was a matter of great pride for him to win a medal in the Paralympics. Lekhara expressed happiness on the occasion and expressed gratitude for the support received from the country. Two-time gold medalist javelin thrower Devendra Jhajharia won a silver medal in javelin throw in the F46 category while discus thrower Yogesh Kathunia finished second in his event as India surpassed their previous best performance in the Games.

Sunder Singh Gurjar finished third behind Jhajharia in the final of the javelin throw F46 event and won the bronze medal. The Prime Minister congratulated Devendra Jhajharia on winning the silver medal and Sunder Singh Gurjar on winning the bronze medal and said that the country is proud of both the players. The Prime Minister said in a tweet, ‘Great performance by Devendra Jhajharia. One of our most experienced players, Jhajharia has won a silver medal. He has been continuously making India proud. Congratulations to him and best wishes for the future.
In another tweet, while congratulating Gurjar, the Prime Minister said, ‘India is delighted to win the bronze of Sunder Singh Gurjar. He has shown great courage and dedication. Congratulations to him and best wishes for the future. Later the Prime Minister spoke to both the players and congratulated them on winning the medal. According to information received from the Prime Minister’s Office, while appreciating Jhajharia’s performance, Modi said, “You are from the land of Maharana Pratap and you have been throwing javelin.” He told Gurjar, ‘You have done a beautiful job.’

Both the medal winners thanked the Prime Minister for his constant encouragement to the players. In a congratulatory message to Kathunia, who won silver in the discus throw competition, Modi said, “Yogesh Kathunia’s performance was excellent. It is a great pleasure to have won their silver medal. His stupendous success will inspire budding players. Congratulations to them. Best wishes for the future. Later, the Prime Minister spoke to Kathunia over the phone and congratulated her.
The Prime Minister also appreciated the efforts of his mother in making Kathunia’s success during this period. According to PMO officials, Kathunia thanked the Prime Minister for his encouragement.
