Digital Desk, Amman. People in Jordan have been urged to follow health precautionary measures, as the total number of corona infections in the kingdom has risen to more than one million amid the rapid spread of the Omicron variant.

Experts called for more stringent rules that force the public to receive vaccines, wear masks and maintain social distancing, Xinhua news agency reported. He warned that economic and social activities may get affected due to the continuous increase in cases.

In Jordan, 2,239 new cases of corona were reported in the last 24 hours, taking the total number of cases to 1,047,953 while 14 Omicron cases have been reported in the state. Saeb Rawashdeh, a political analyst at the Jordan Press Foundation, told Xinhua that the number of corona cases has skyrocketed in the past few months because the public is not taking health measures seriously.

According to the government, the public is not allowed to enter commercial centres, malls, public and private agencies without showing their vaccination certification or negative PCR test. Ravshadeh said, however, with the passage of time people have given up vigilance. The government announced on Thursday that it would tighten health measures. Under the new measures, people are required to have a certificate of two-dose vaccination and a negative PCR test valid for 48 hours to join the New Year celebrations.

Local economist Hosam Aysh said Jordan’s economy has been hit hard by the coronavirus pandemic and government shutdowns in the past months. Jordan’s economy grew by 3.2 percent in the first half of 2021. Unemployment reached 24.8 percent in the second quarter, up 1.9 percent from the same period in 2020, according to statistics from the Department of Statistics. For the economy, it is important to meet the target rate of people vaccinated, he said.
