New Delhi. India’s discus thrower Kamalpreet Kaur has secured a place in the finals of the Tokyo Olympics with a strong performance. Indian athlete Kamalpreet is a big fan of former opener Virender Sehwag. She wants to play in a cricket tournament ‘someday’ but on the condition that it doesn’t come in the way of her ‘first passion’. The idea of making a career in cricket also came in her mind, but now she is standing on the threshold of making history in Tokyo.
The 25-year-old qualified for the final round on Saturday with her best effort of 64m in discus throw. He said that he has a ‘natural talent’ to play cricket as a batsman. He started trying his hand at cricket last year to deal with the psychological challenges during the nationwide lockdown to protect against the corona virus.

She said, ‘I am not giving up throwing discos, this is my first passion. I want to repay the debt of Athletics Federation of India (AFI) and Sports Authority of India (SAI) by winning a medal on Monday. He has left no stone unturned for my training, competition. Kamalpreet said in an interview, ‘After the Olympics, I want to win a gold medal in the World Championships (2022) and the Asian Games.’
Kamalpreet said, ‘I want to play in some cricket tournaments though someday. That (cricket) is my second passion. I can play cricket while continuing with athletics. I have played cricket in my village and nearby places. I think I have a natural talent to play cricket. Kamalpreet loves to bat and is a fan of former India opener Virender Sehwag and former captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni.

25-year-old Kamalpreet was once battling depression. He said, ‘I like to bat like Sehwag or Dhoni. He has less technique but he can play big shots against any bowler. Especially Sehwag, I remember many of his best innings.
“I will never forget Sehwag’s double century against West Indies (219 runs in Indore in 2011) and ODI World Cup (175 runs in 140 balls in 2011) against Bangladesh. He also likes the batting of great cricketer Sachin Tendulkar and opener Rohit Sharma.
Experienced Seema Punia failed to qualify for the final in the same discus throw event on Saturday. Kamalpreet had earlier set national records in various competitions in India with throws of 65.06m and 66.59m, following which Seema had recently asked the AFI to investigate Kamalpreet’s hyperandrogenism (high levels of testosterone in the body compared to women). . The federation, however, rejected his allegations.
Without naming anyone, Kamalpreet said, “I was hurt (by the allegations). She is senior to me and instead of guiding me, she was making allegations without any proof. When asked about his first Olympics, he said, “Olympics is a big opportunity. I was feeling nervous before the opening throw but then I felt good. I was sure of doing well till the third throw and that’s why I threw the disc for 64 meters.
