Islamabad/Beijing: Pakistan has rejected the US’s declaration of it as a State of Special Concern as arbitrary and selective assessment and said it is completely out of ground reality and casts serious doubts on the credibility of the exercise. The US on Wednesday described several countries including Pakistan, China, Iran, North Korea and Myanmar as countries of special concern over violations of religious freedom. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said, “I condemn Burma (Myanma), the People’s Republic of China (China), Eritrea, Iran, the DPRK (Korea), Pakistan, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan to institutionalize religious freedom. I declare countries of particular concern to engage in or tolerate violence and serious violations.

Pakistan Foreign Office Spokesperson Asim Iftikhar Ahmed said that declaring Pakistan as a State of Special Concern is completely beyond ground reality and casts serious doubts on the credibility of the exercise. “Such naming does not promote religious freedom around the world,” he said.

At the same time, on Thursday, Dragon criticized China for placing it in the category of countries of concern for violation of religious freedom. China also accused the US of frequently using religious issues to interfere in the internal affairs of other countries.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian told Beijing media that China strongly opposes the baseless allegations because it is defaming the country’s religious freedom. When asked about the US allegations, Zhao said, “The Chinese government protects the religious freedom of citizens in accordance with the law.” He said that China has about 200 million people following religious beliefs, more than 3.80 lakh religious workers, 5500 religious groups and more than 1.40 lakh places for religious activities.
