Leander Paes said on the relationship with Bhupathi – Even during good performance, our relationship was going through a bad phase

Mumbai. Tennis legend Leander Paes on Friday said the upcoming non-fiction series “Break Point” will give fans an insight into his tense but successful professional pairing with Mahesh Bhupathi. This series by filmmakers Nitesh Tiwari and Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari is scheduled to release on Zee5 on October 1. In this, the partnership between the two Indian tennis giants has been shown on and off the (tennis) court. The pair won the men’s pair title at Wimbledon in 1999. This was the first title of an Indian ‘doubles team’.

At one time both the players who were the ‘poster boys’ of this game in the country were called ‘Indian Express’. Earlier they played together from 1996 to 2006. Then, between 2008 and 2011, both of them again added color to the playing field. After this, the two parted publicly and have now come together again to share their story through ‘Break Point’.

At the digital launch of the trailer of the seven-episode series, Paes said the series helped him put his career in perspective and things would have been different had the two just communicated. He said, ‘It is very strange that most of the times when we stood on the podium with trophies in our hands, then our relationship was going through the worst phase. Yet being able to overcome that… we had camaraderie. He (Bhupathi) knew that whenever he needed me, I would be around and I used to think the same for him.

Paes and Bhupathi, who played as a pair for more than 12 years, won three Grand Slams. Paes said the most striking aspect of the two was their ability to come together to play for the country, whatever their personal issues.
