Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) on Friday defeated defending champions Mumbai Indians by 2 wickets in the opening match of the 14th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) played at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. The match was decided on the last ball. This is the first time RCB has named its first match of the season. Earlier in 2007, 2017 and 2019, Bangalore team had to face defeat while playing their first match of the season.
Mumbai Indians, batting first, set a target of 160 runs in front of Bangalore, which they achieved at the loss of 8 wickets off the last ball of the 20th over. AB de Villiers played an excellent innings of 48 runs for Bangalore. Apart from them, Glam Maxwell scored 39 and captain Virat Kohli scored 33 runs. For Mumbai, Marco Jenson and Jasprit Bumrah took two wickets each. Mumbai’s team lost their first match for the eighth consecutive season.
Earlier, Mumbai lost 159 for 9 wickets in the allotted 20 overs, batting first after losing the toss. Chris Lynn scored 49 runs for him. Apart from this, Suryakumar Yadav contributed 31, Ishaan Kishan contributed 28 runs.
Harshal Patel took five wickets from Bangalore while Jameson and Sundar got one each. Patel did not concede a single in the final over while taking three wickets. A total of Mumbai’s four wickets fell in this over.
