Menlo Park (USA):Facebook has said that it will shut down the face recognition system and delete the faceprints of more than a billion people. According to a blog posted on Tuesday by Jerome Pecenti, deputy head of the artificial intelligence department at Facebook’s new parent (holding) company, Meta, “this move will be the biggest shift towards the use of face recognition in the history of technology.” According to the post, “more than a third of Facebook’s active users have accepted our facial recognition setting and were successful in recognizing them.” As a result, more than a billion people’s face recognition templates will be erased.
Let us tell you that earlier last week Facebook had talked about changing the name of the company. It was said on behalf of the company that it is now changing its name from Facebook to Meta. Along with this, it was also said that it will focus on the use of technology to promote imagination in the Internet journey.
Facebook Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Mark Zuckerberg has said that his company will now be known under the new name ‘Meta’ as part of an effort to incorporate digital change for the future. Zuckerberg calls it the “Metaverse”. Zuckerberg says he expects the metaverse to reach a billion people within the next decade.
Zuckerberg says that ‘Metaverse’ will be a platform on which people will be able to communicate and work to create products and content. He hopes it will be a new platform that will create “millions” of jobs for creators. The announcement comes at a time when Facebook is facing an existential crisis. It is facing legislative and regulatory scrutiny in many parts of the world following the revelations in Facebook Papers.
