Delhi Riots: Activists Natasha, Kalita and Iqbal come out of Tihar Jail; High court had given bail two days ago

Digital Desk, New Delhi. Two days after being granted bail in the 2020 Delhi riots case, Pinjra Tod activist Natasha Narwal, Devangana Kalita walked out of Tihar Jail. Student Islamic Organization activist Asif Iqbal Tanha has also been released from jail. Despite the bail order of the Delhi High Court, these people were in jail. After this, the Delhi Court today ordered the immediate release of these people.

A senior Delhi jail official said that Kalita and Narwal came out of the jail around 7 pm and Tanha around 7.30 pm. After being released, Tanha said, it was hoped that one day I would be released. The fight against CAA, NRC, NPR will continue. At the same time, the Supreme Court will hear on Friday the petition of Delhi Police challenging the bail.

After getting bail on June 15 from the High Court, on Wednesday, Additional Sessions Judge Ravinder Bedi of the lower court deferred the order on the release of the activists. Delhi Police had sought time for verification of the addresses of the accused and their sureties, due to which the release order was deferred. Delhi Police had said that since Asif Iqbal Tanha, Natasha Narwal and Devnaga Kalita are permanent residents of Jharkhand, Assam and Rohtak, the probe agency will take time to file the said verification. Delhi Police said mere phone number is not sufficient for verification of bail and physical verification is required.

On Thursday, the lawyer of the activists approached the Delhi High Court challenging the decision to postpone the release in the lower court. The application said that the action of the trial court is against the spirit of the bail order of the High Court and violates the fundamental right to personal liberty. After this, a bench of Delhi High Court Justice Siddharth Mridul and Justice Anoop Jairam Bhambhani asked the lower court to act expeditiously.

Trial Court (Karkardooma) Additional Sessions Judge Ravinder Bedi dismissed the applications filed by the Delhi Police, seeking more time to probe the addresses of the activists and their sureties. The court directed the immediate release of the accused as per the order of the Delhi High Court. At the same time, the court also said, since some time will be required to verify the permanent address of the accused. The report in this regard should be filed by the Inquiry Officer before the concerned court on or before 23.06.2021 at 2:30 PM.
