Digital Desk, New Delhi. The CIA on Thursday announced a number of structural changes, including setting up a new mission center for China. This has been claimed in a recent CAN report. The move has been taken considering China as a long-term threat to the United States. In a statement, CIA Director William Burns called the Chinese the biggest geopolitical threat in the 21st century. Burns said the new China Mission Center will further strengthen our collective work on the most important geopolitical threat facing us in the 21st century.
The CIA said in a statement on Thursday that it would set up a top-level working group on China to counter Beijing’s growing influence. The group will now be part of about a dozen mission centers run by the CIA, which will hold regular high-level meetings on strategy towards China. Other adjustments include a new international and technology mission center and a chief technology officer position. This second mission center will focus on issues critical to America’s global competitiveness, the report said. A senior CIA official said the mission center will focus on all-important issues in the context of America’s global competitiveness, including global health, economic security, climate change and technology.
According to the report, Rodney Faraone, a former CIA China analyst, says that the CIA’s mission centers integrate key functions of operations and analysis, pointing to other major mission centers such as counterterrorism and counterintelligence. The idea is that the more communication and collaboration they work together, the better the results of collection and intelligence production, the Pharaoh, who is responsible for the president’s daily briefing, added. The official said that the two mission centers naturally overlap, as the main area of competition with China is technology. He said, it is about innovation and ensuring that we are moving ahead with the revolution in technology.
