Chandigarh: Counting of votes for Chandigarh Municipal Corporation elections is underway and the result is expected to be declared by Monday afternoon. Nine counting centers have been set up for 35 wards of the municipality and counting began at 9 am, officials said. More than 60 percent voting was recorded in the elections held here on Friday. The number of wards has increased from 26 in 2016 to 35 now.

Traditionally, municipal elections held every five years see a close contest between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress, but with the entry of the Aam Aadmi Party, the fight has turned triangular this time.

The BJP has a majority in the current civic body. In the last municipal elections, the BJP had won 20 seats and its former ally Shiromani Akali Dal had won one. The Congress had got only four seats. The BJP has fought the election on its achievements of the last five years, while the Congress and AAP have targeted the BJP for allegedly failing to do development work and going down the city in the Swachh Survekshan (a ranking for cleanliness) ranking. But criticized him. Both the parties have also surrounded the BJP for not solving the problem of Dadumajra garbage storage site and increasing the prices of essential materials.
