Big news: Qatar to host 2030 Asian Games, Saudi Arabia to host 2034
The decision was taken on Wednesday after the agreement between the two rival countries. Doha overtakes Riyadh in the race to host the 2030 Asian Games
Muscat Doha, the capital of Qatar, will host the Asian Games to be held in 2030, while four years later, in 2034, these games will be held in Riyadh. The decision was taken on Wednesday after an agreement between these two rival countries.
Doha overtook Riyadh in the race to host the 2030 Asian Games. Votes for this were held in the General Assembly of the Asian Olympic Council (OCA). The vote was concluded amid long-standing political disputes between Saudi Arabia and Qatar.Saudi Arabia is among the four countries that boycotted Qatar’s trade and travel in 2017, although there have been recent indications that the dispute between them could be resolved. The OCA came to the conclusion that the winner will be assigned the 2030 host in the voting, while the second candidate will host the Games in 2034.
Neither won nor lost
OCA President Sheikh Ahmed Al Fahd Al Sabah said that this meant there was no winner and no one lost. He thanked the foreign ministers of Saudi Arabia and Qatar and the host of the conference Oman for reaching this agreement. The FIFA World Cup will also be held in Qatar in 2022.
On Wednesday, the voting was continuously delayed due to the problem in the electronic voting machine, because many representatives were voting in their own country due to the corona virus epidemic. Ballot papers were given to 26 delegates in the conference hall, while 19 delegates voted through electronic machines while staying in their constituencies.
