Barcelona Rafael Nadal advanced to the next round of the Barcelona Open tennis tournament by winning three sets against his 111th ranked opponent while Fabio Fognini was disqualified for allegedly using abusive words. Fognini was then trailing 6–0, 4–4 against Spain qualifier Japata Mirales when the line judge told the chair umpire that the Italian ninth-seeded player had used abuses. Fognini denied this and was disappointed when he was disqualified. He also broke his racket in anger.

Rafael Nadal recovered from a slow start to beat Ilya Iveska of Belarus 3-6 6-2 6-4 in the first round of this claycourt tournament. The Spaniard had lost the first two games and had to struggle to save his serve in the third game. After losing the first set, he made a good comeback and won the second set easily and achieved a break point at the beginning of the third set.

Two-time Barcelona champion Nadal will next take on Japan’s Kei Nishikori, who defeated Chilean Christian Garin 7-6 (5), 4-6, 6-1. Nadal lost to Andre Rublev in the quarter-finals of the Montecarlo Masters last week. Rublev continued his good form and beat Federico Gaio 6-4, 6-3 in Barcelona to advance to the next round.

Second-seeded Stephanos Citicipas, who defeated Rublev in the Montecarlo final, won an easy 6–0, 6–2 win over Spain’s Jaum Munar. Sixth seed Pablo Carreno Basta beat Jordan Thompson of Australia 6-4 6-0 while Felix Agur Aliacime of Canada beat Lorenzo Musetti of Italy 4-6 6-3 6-0.
