Only 5.1% (4,196 people) consumed two or more artificially sweetened drinks a day. These women were more likely to be obese and exercise less, although the study results were well adjusted to take into account factors that can affect the risk of heart disease and stroke.

Compared to women who drank one or less diet drinks a week, women who drank two or more drinks a day had a 23% increased risk of stroke. At the same time, the risk of coronary heart disease increased by 29% and the risk of dying increased by 16%.

Increased risk of ischemic stroke
When the analysis was broken down for different types of stroke, women who drank two or more diet drinks a day were found to have a 31% increased risk of ischemic stroke. Ischemic stroke is the most common type of stroke, caused by blood clot blocking, which blocks an artery in the brain. The researchers did not find any increased risk of hemorrhagic stroke, which is caused by rupturing of a blood vessel in the brain. This was the first study to assess the risk of different types of stroke in relation to the consumption of artificially sweetened drinks.
